The Long Legged Beauties calendars are now in it's third year and again teams up retired racing Greyhounds with fashion and glamour models to raise funds for Greyhound Rescue (all the profits from the calendars go to Greyhound Rescue) and to help increase awareness that ex racing Greyhounds make excellent family pets.
The idea for the calendars came from Stuart and Jenny Stott of Cumbria who began fostering Greyhounds for Dumfriesshire and Cumbria Greyhound Rescue 3½ years ago. They've just reached a huge milestone as they have just taken in their 60 th foster dog. Stuart does the photographer for the calendars and the Greyhounds featured include Jenny and Stuart's own two Greyhounds along with an assortment of the ones they've fostered.
To help raise awareness and promote to a wider market three different styles of calendar are produced.
1. ‘Just Greyhounds' – featuring just the Greyhounds.
2. ‘Greyhounds and Lifestyle – featuring Greyhounds with pretty girls in lifestyle poses.
3. ‘Greyhounds – Sexy and Safety' – A ‘lads mag' style calendar featuring Greyhounds with sexy girls using a Health and Safety theme. The girls are the ones doing silly things and the Greyhounds are portrayed as being the sensible ones.
Jenny Stott says: “We pose models alongside the Greyhounds to illustrate just what affectionate creatures Greyhounds really are and we produce three styles of calendar to suit all tastes so as to reach a wider market.”
Each year thousands of healthy Greyhounds are put to sleep because they don't make the grade or finish their racing careers which is often at two or three years of age. It's not that the dogs don't like to run because they love it but it's what happens to them when they are no longer wanted that concerns us and many media articles have highlighted the sad end that some of these dogs suffer.
Ryan O'Meara, Editor in Chief for K9 Magazine commented. "The misconception of Greyhounds being a high maintenance pet is gradually evaporating. Campaigns such as the Long Legged Beauties calendars are fantastic for showing the Greyhound as the laid back, friendly and extremely loyal pet that he is. They don't require any more exercise than your average dog and with an ex racer, you are providing a much needed home for what will be a fantastic family pet."
Stuart says about the fostering: “typically a dog will come into rescue from a racing kennel and then be assigned to us to foster. The dog may have no experience of living in a home so we have to introduce them to everyday things such as stairs, glass doors, and televisions. Our resident Greyhounds Bobby and Indi take it upon themselves to show a new dog the ropes and how to play. We then help to look for a permanent home for them and support the new owners during the adoption process”.
Over 350 models applied to take part in the 2008 calendars from all over the UK . London glamour model Yazmin appears in the lifestyle calendar and in the somewhat controversial sexy and safety calendar which features scantily clad models in a series of “accidents waiting to happen”. The Greyhounds are wisely pointing out the hazards.
Yazmin says:
The greeting I got when I first met the dogs is one that I'll never forget, three greyhounds bounding around me making such a fuss of me and licking me, I fell in love with them straight away and was taken aback by just how lovely they are. The whole experience was fantastic, fun and was the best photo shoot I have ever done"
All the profits from the calendars will be donated to Dumfriesshire & Cumbria Greyhound rescue which covers the areas of south west Scotland and Cumbria .
Albert Todd Homing Co-ordinator of Dumfriesshire and Cumbria Greyhound Rescue says:
“This will be the third year that Stuart and Jenny have produced a calendar in aid of Greyhound Rescue, hopefully it will as successful, or even better than the previous years. The plight of the retired Greyhound is an ongoing issue and anything that can raise awareness, in a positive way, can only be a good thing. Hopefully the sales of the calendars will help aid that awareness”.
