Glamour models help find homes for Greyhounds.

Glamour and fashion models from all over the UK have been competing to appear alongside ex racing Greyhounds in the 2007 Long Legged Beauties calendars. The girls have been outraged by the wholesale slaughter of ex racing dogs recently reported in the media.

The calendars produced by Stuart and Jenny Stott of Cumbria first appeared last year and sold as far away as Australia . This year the couple are producing three different styles of calendar with two of the calendars featuring two legged as well as four legged models' one calendar has a funny but somewhat raunchy theme to it.

Jenny Stott says: “Last year we posed models alongside the Greyhounds to illustrate what affectionate creatures Greyhounds really are. The models ensured the calendar got noticed by the media both in the UK and overseas. This year we decided to produce one calendar just featuring dogs, one similar to last year and one shot in a lads mag style”

Each year thousands of healthy Greyhounds are put down at the end of racing careers which can end at two or three years of age. Recent media articles have highlighted the sad end that many of these dogs suffer.

Ryan O'Meara, Editor in Chief for K9 Magazine commented. "The misconception of Greyhounds being a high maintenance pet is gradually evaporating. Campaigns such as the Long Legged Beauties calendar are fantastic for showing the Greyhound as the laid back, friendly and extremely loyal pet that he is. They don't require any more exercise than your average dog and with an ex racer, you are providing a much needed home for what will be a fantastic family pet."

All the dogs featured in the calendars have been fostered by Jenny and Stuart who have looked after 36 dogs in the last two years.

Stuart says: “typically a dog will come into rescue from a racing kennel and then be assigned to us to foster. The dog may have no experience of living in a home so we have to introduce them to everyday things such as stairs, glass doors, and televisions. Our resident dogs Bobby and Indi take it upon themselves to show a new dog the ropes and how to play. We then help to look for a permanent home for them and support the new owners during the adoption process”.

Over 350 models applied to take part in the 2007 calendars from all over the UK . London glamour model Yazmin appears in the lifestyle calendar and in the somewhat controversial safety calendar which features scantily clad models in a series of “accidents waiting to happen”. The Greyhounds are wisely pointing out the hazards.

Yazmin says: The greeting I got when I first met the dogs is one that I'll never forget, three greyhounds bounding around me making such a fuss of me and licking me, I fell in love with them straight away and was taken aback by just how lovely they are. The whole experience was fantastic, fun and was the best photo shoot I have ever done. I now take every opportunity to tell whoever will listen what lovely dog's greyhounds are and how they really do make fantastic pets.

All the profits from the calendars will be donated to Dumfriesshire Greyhound rescue which covers the areas of south west Scotland and Cumbria .

Albert Todd Homing Coordinator and Deputy Chairman of Dumfriesshire Greyhound Rescue says:
“This will be the second year that Stuart and Jenny have produced a calendar in aid of Greyhound Rescue, hopefully it will as successful or even better than the previous year. The plight of the retired Greyhound is an ongoing issue and any thing that can raise awareness, in a positive way, can only be a good thing. Hopefully the sales of the calendars will help aid that awareness”.

Calendars are available at £5.75 each from www.longleggedbeauties.co.uk or by calling 015395 52394. There is also more information about fostering greyhounds and greyhound rescue at www.ourgreyhounds.co.uk

Spokes model statement

Greyhounds and Glamour

By London glamour model Yazmin

When I saw the advert looking for models to do a shoot for a greyhound rescue calendar, being an animal lover, I was intrigued and went straight to the link for more information. As I began to read I was hooked and wanted to be a part of this great cause. I was saddened and shocked and felt very naïve reading about the greyhounds, guess I thought like many others that once their racing life was over they lived a happy life until the end with their owners, how wrong was I, or may be that would be in a perfect world, but then in a perfect world animals wouldn't be bred for the gambling and sport industry.

I emailed Jenny and Stuart saying that I would love to model for the calendar and do anything I could to help raise awareness. It was a long wait as they had over 350 models all wanting to do the same, to appear with the dogs. But then on Tuesday 14 th March I got the email I'd hoped for, saying I had been selected to model for the calendar, I was over the moon and a date for the shoot was made.

On Wednesday 24 th May I was on my way and travelling up to the Lake District for my shoot, very excited and looking forward to meeting Jenny, Stuart and the 4 greyhounds. Stuart met me at the station and he briefed me on the two day shoot on the way to his house. The greeting I got at the house is one that I'll never forget, three greyhounds bounding around me making such a fuss of me and licking me, I fell in love with them straight away and was taken aback by just how lovely they are. The fourth one, Leister my babe, he was very timid, but you only have to read his story to see why, and look at him now – wow only Stuart and Jenny could have done that.

Now I could go on and on about what a fantastic time I had on that shoot and all the little stories I have, but they are my memories that will always be with me through my life. I had never modelled with dogs before and I have to say it's nothing like modelling with people, you have to stay In position at all times and wait for the dogs to be in position and looking right before the shot is perfect, that is so hard when you've got a beautiful dog next to you and all you want to do is cuddle them!

One picture in particular comes to mind of Jack and I in the field at sunset, I'm looking at him and he starts to come towards me, so automatically I go to kiss him, Stuart takes the picture just as I'm about to look like a goldfish, and just after the shot was taken Jack gives me a huge lick on the face – I love that shot!

The whole experience was fantastic, fun and was the best photo shoot I have ever done, I loved working with the dogs and learning all the little tricks to get them to look in the right direction and put ears up at the right time, but I'm not revealing how that's done!

Before I knew it, time had flown by and it was time to go home, leaving them was very emotional and I didn't want to leave. When I got home all I could do was tell everyone I knew about the wonderful time I had and what lovely dog's greyhounds are and how they really do make fantastic pets. The support I got from people was great, all saying that they would buy a calendar to support them.

When I got a phone call from Stuart asking me to come back for a second shoot, I was over the moon to be going back to see them all again so soon and we set the date for early July. Again another fantastic time was had by both me and the greyhounds; they are my favourite models to work with.

It was on my second visit that I had two great bits of news awaiting me, the first was that Leister had found a new home and he had progressed so much and let me cuddle up to him. The second was such an honour for me when Jenny & Stuart asked me to be the spokes Model for the 2007 Calendars.

So here I am, and to sum up, Greyhounds are loving, have a gentle temperament, and do make fantastic pets, so please help with making people aware of them and support our calendar.

Kisses

Yazmin
